My ONE WORD for 2021 is...
... ADVENTURE!

What's the significance of the word ADVENTURE for me? Three important things come to mind.
1. Adventure means being open to abundance and mystery and “fearing not.”
“Security is mostly a superstition. It does not exist in nature, nor do the children of men as a whole experience it. Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure or nothing. To keep our faces toward change and behave like free spirits in the presence of fate is strength undefeatable.” - Helen Keller (in Faith Fears Not, 1940)
2. Adventure means pushing the limits of being an Enlightened Rebel.
As such, I will continue to question the assumptions and beliefs behind the dominant consumer culture as well as our outdated notions around leadership and workplace design. And I will continue to explore better ways of living and working together.
3. Adventure means accepting all “offers” without resisting or objecting.
This is a nod to my interest in Applied Improvisation and an extention of my 2020 word, ACCEPTANCE. I want to get much better at seeing everything as an offer and looking at everything as something that I can use. I'm still a bit too attached to being in control.
“Those who say ‘Yes’ are rewarded by the adventures they have, and those who say ‘No’ are rewarded by the safety they attain.” – Keith Johnstone
Did you notice the significance the the cycling jersey I'm wearing in the picture above? The French term for a breakaway specialist in bicycle racing is baroudeur or adventurer. I will wear that jersey proudly throughout the year and it will be a constant reminder of my commitment to living into the adventure that 2021 will undoubtedly bring.
